I’m traveling to Japan in a little bit over a month for 10 days. Traveling internationally is tricky, especially to a place that I don’t know the language; how to manage the trip cost can be challenging also.
Knowing Japan is expensive but not knowing how expensive, I think I’m going to save as much as I can and hope for the best. So I came up with a plan called “A dollar A day” plan to maximize my savings before the trip. It will start 30 days before my trip, on March 10.
This is the plan:
1. Only use $1 or less a day. This excludes gas as my gas usage for daily commute to work already exceeds this amount or travel related expenses such as the international driver’s permit. Most of the times, this will mean I’ll spend less than $1 on food as I don’t really spend much money elsewhere.
2. If I perform well and continuously use $1 or less everyday for the first 2 weeks, I get to eat out once during the second 2 weeks.
3. I will blog everyday about my progress.
4. When I complete the 30 day challenge, I should have saved an additional of $300 as my monthly budget for groceries is $250 and eating out is $100. I will then transfer this amount to my CitiBank Driver’s Edge credit card that I will use over in Japan since I’m receiving the 5% cash rebate through most of April.
